Armistice Day
Remebrance Sunday 2007
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the Great War ended. Civilians wanted to remember the people who had given their lives for peace and freedom. An American War Secretary, Moina Michael, began selling poppies to friends to raise money for the ex-Service community. And so the tradition began.
Raising money though poppies is an easy way to do your bit for those who have served and are currently serving in the British Armed Forces, and their dependants. The money you raise will go towards supporting those who have been prepared to make a personal sacrifice through serving in the British Armed Forces.

The dedication of the Chancel Wall-Hanging, a focal point in the chancel area, took place this morning at the 11am Worship, Sundxay 13th January 2008. There are many people who have worked on this over the past 20 months: Catherine Bower, Eileen Brown, Jo Fraser, June Henderson, Betty Law, Koshi Maddox, Eileen Presley, Carol Plowman, Jennifer Risk, Isobel Wilson and Celia Walker. Kay Cruden, a friend from Melrose , lent us the quilting frame. Shore Porters transported the quilting frame from the Borders. Hamish Mitchell and a joiner friend modified the curtain rail to make space for the hanging. Andrew Scott arranged the manufacture and installed the support bar. Thanks also to all who gave us materials and threads. |

A Look Ahead
It has been decided that there will be no Passiontide Concert this year. This decision allows The Choir to work on several new anthems for singing at Sunday Worship. These include:
Solus Ad Victimam by Leighton and Since By Man Came Death by Handel from his Messiah.
Thursday rehearsals will continue until Thursday 13th March and start back on Thursday 17th April.

The Choir Session 07/08 was different from years past. We continued to lead the worship at every Sunday, sing an anthem every Sunday and have a rehearsal every Thursday, but we only put on one concert; the Festival of Five Lessons Carols and Mince Pies. Why? Because this year Holburn West Choir expanded its repertoire more than before, and focused its energy on providing the congregation of Holburn West with weekly anthems of the highest quality. Notibly the Choir performed Solus ad Victimam by Leighton on Palm Sunday; an anthem which took weeks of rehearsal and took its toll on the Choir and myself, but in the end was performed tremendously.
Sadly the year was also marked by the death of long standing tenor in the choir, Mr David Parkinson. David had been ill and unable to attend rehearsals for the last year, but he will be remembered as always bringing a dry sense of humour to every choir rehearsal, and for never failing to make us laugh. R.I.P.
As usual, the year would not have been possible without the unfailing help of a number of people for their support, advice and kindness. To them, I am eternally grateful.
The Choir session will re-commence in September and I look forward to rehearsals starting again.
Dominic Scullion
